Welcome to the Oakland Junior Police Academy’s Informational Page.
Our first ever academy, Class #1, was held from July 18 – July 22, 2016, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The class was free of charge to the participants due to a very generous donation from the Oakland/Franklin Lakes Rotary Club.
The children learned by doing; each day included military drills, physical training and defensive tactics as well as instruction on drug and alcohol avoidance modeled after the Too Good For Drugs curriculum. We were lucky to have special presentations by the Bergen County Sheriff’s Department BOMB Squad and K-9 units, Bergen County Regional SWAT, Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office and Amtrak Police K-9. The Oakland First Aid Squad gave a re-creation of an actual emergency call and then led the youth in hands on learning of CPR and basic first aid. The New Jersey State Police even landed their helicopter at the recreation field.
The children learned leadership skills as they were assembled into squads which were supervised by youth squad leaders, who were under the direction of a youth platoon leader.
The week was a tremendous success; the youth were engaged, interested and absorbed the knowledge offered like sponges. The youth leadership stepped up with a willingness to lead that inspired us all.
If you think your child would be interested in a dynamic, hands on fun week of learning about law enforcement; send us an e-mail. The academy is open to Oakland residents who are entering 7th, 8th and 9th grade. Thank you for your time and interest in this program.
