Registrar of Vital Statistics

The Registrar of Vital Statistics maintains vital records of births, marriages, re-marriages, civil unions, re-affirmations of civil unions, domestic partnerships and deaths that have occurred in OaklandVital records are considered highly confidential documents and may be be accessed only by eligible parties via an application process

Certified Copies:

Certified copies of birth, marriage and death certificates are issued only for the events that have taken place in Oakland. Individuals requesting a copy of a record of birth, death or marriage must file an Application and pay $25.00 for the first copy, and $5.00 for each additional copy. A State or local Registrar may issue a certified copy of a vital record only to persons who establish themselves as the subject of the vital record, the subject's parent, legal guardian or legal representative, spouse, child, grandchild or sibling, if of legal age, to a State or Federal Agency for official purposes, pursuant to court order.

Click here for an Application Form & Steps to Apply for a Non-Genealogical (Certified) Copy of a birth, marriage, re-marriage, civil union, re-affirmation of a civil union or a domestic partnership certificate. If you require a Non-Geneological (Certified) Copy with an Apostille Seal, you must obtain the document through the New Jersey Office of Vital Statistics and Registry and indicate that you require an Apostille Seal when ordering.

Marriage or Civil Union Application:

An appointment is necessary to apply for a marriage/civil union license, please contact the registrar two to three weeks prior to the ceremony. To file for a marriage or civil union application, one person must be a resident of Oakland. Documents required with the application for a marriage/civil union license include: 
  
  • $25.00 state fee and $3.00 local fee, payable by separate checks or cash; 
  • A Driver’s License, Passport, or State / Federal Identification;
  • One Witness Eighteen Years or Older;
  • Proof of Residency;
  • Social Security Card.
There is a seventy-two (72) hour waiting period between the time of the application and the time the license can be issued. Once the license is issued it must be used within thirty (30) days.
 

Marriage License Application Fees are waived by the State for period 7/1/2022 through 6/30/2023.

Appointments are required two to three weeks prior to the wedding. The application process takes approximately 15 minutes. Domestic Partnerships:


Couples wishing to enter into a Domestic Partnership may obtain the required Affidavit of Domestic Partnership from a registrar in any New Jersey municipality and may file the Affidavit with a registrar in any New Jersey municipality. Domestic Partnership is only available to couples (of same or opposite sex) age 62 or older. There is no fee for the Affidavit itself. There are two fees due when the Affidavit is filed ($25.00 State fee and $3.00 Local fee).
