Mayor's Message - March 2021

Mayor Linda H. Schwager

Our town, the Borough of Oakland, will be highlighted in a feature article in the New York Times newpaper.  The article will appear in the Sunday edition, March 7, 2021.

As we are all aware it has been very difficult to register for a vaccination appointment.  Many people spend hours on the computer and there are people who do not have access to the internet to try to register. I receive calls and emails daily from residents asking for help.  Our Senior Citizen Director, Arielle, is creating a project to work with our senior citizen residents to help with the registration process. I have reached out to Bergen County Health Department.  I contacted the other FLOW mayors to join forces to try to get a vaccination site in our area.  I reached out to the Governor's office.  Major problem is that there isn't enough vaccine to go around with sufficient refrigeration required.  The towns that advertise that their town has become a vaccination site are scarce and most do not not have the vaccine requested.  There is a light at the end of the tunnel --the Johnson&Johnson one-dose vaccine to be released soon (hopefully before you read this message). Without the need for the extremely cold temperature storage, this vaccine may become more available.

Important: Beware of Scams:

DO NOT fall prey to people who contact you offering to get you an appointment for the vaccine asking for your personal information and for credit card information. It is a scam!

Oakland has become a mobile rapid testing site at the senior citizen center parking lot.  You drive up in your vehicle, stay in your vehicle and your attendee comes to your vehicle.  Testing days and hours are Mondays and Wednesdays, 10 am to 6 pm and Saturdays 10 am to 3 pm. To register for an appointment go online test.oaklandnj.online.

Stay safe and be well.
