Vegetative Waste Collection Update:

There was an issue with the Borough’s hauler for vegetative waste today and the hauler will be back tomorrow to collect the remaining streets. The remaining streets are parts of Hiawatha to Monhegan, and the dead ends off of Franklin Avenue. Please leave your yard waste out at the curb.

Update on the General Election:

If you have not received your Vote by Mail ballot, please contact the County Clerk’s office at 201-336-7020 or the Borough Clerk’s office at 201-337-8111 ext. 2001.  If you have not received your vote by mail ballot, you can go in person to the County Clerk’s office, 1 Bergen County Plaza, Hackensack, NJ to pick up the ballot. The phone number is (201) 336-7020. They will be open Monday to Friday from 9:30 am to 4:00 pm.  

The General Election is primarily vote by mail. The Borough of Oakland has a ballot drop box at the Borough Hall, 1 Municipal Plaza, Oakland, NJ 07436 to the left of the front door. The box is under 24/7 surveillance and is emptied once a day by the County of Bergen. Oakland’s only polling location on Election Day is at Valley Middle School on Oak Street. Residents may vote in person ONLY on a paper provisional ballot. The voting machines are ONLY for those that are blind and illiterate and must sign a certification. Update from Oakland Recreation on Indoor Sports:

Although the Governor has allowed the start of indoor sports, Oakland Recreation is dependent on the Oakland schools opening their gyms before they can begin the basketball program. At this time Recreation is still waiting to hear if and when the school will allow the programs to begin. The wrestling program has come up with an alternative plan that will allow for the program to begin. Information on wrestling will be coming out shortly.

Update from the Oakland Senior Center:

The Oakland Senior Center has a mix of in person, zoom only, and hybrid programs available. This is indicated on the calendar.  If anyone would like to attend an in person class, they are asked to call or email the senior center to register in advance. If they would like to be added to our email list to receive the Zoom links for online classes they can reach out to us as well at (201) 405-7731 or seniors@oakland-nj.org.

Through the county’s Division of Senior Services, the Senior Center will be offering private appointments for anyone who needs assistance with navigating Medicare through SHIP (State Health Insurance Program) with a state certified counselor. Open enrollment for Medicare are 10/15- 12/7. The next date for SHIP appointments will be Monday, November 9. Appointments will begin at 9:30am and run up to 45 minutes. They are on a first come first serve basis. If anyone is interested in learning more or setting up an appointment, they can contact myself at the Senior Center at  (201) 405-7731. A flyer with additional information is available on the Oakland Website and to pick up at the Senior Center.

With the Oakland Library, the Oakland Senior Center will be offering a new service to homebound Oakland Seniors and members of the community with disabilities. Books 2 Go is a book and media delivery program where we will drop off your rentals right to your house weekly and pick up your returns. The service will begin the week of October 5th. Book delivery and returns will be held weekly on Tuesdays by the Senior Center Bus. Those interested are asked to call the library at (201) 337-3742 to reserve your books. If you don’t have a specific book in mind, no problem! The fantastic staff at the library will put together book bundles based on your preferences. A flyer is available on the Oakland website.

The Senior Center’s weekly shopping bus has resumed service and is open to Oakland residents 55+. We offer door to door transportation to Shoprite weekly and alternate locations within Oakland by appointment. A flyer with more information is available on the Oakland Website and at the Senior Center to pick up.

Coronavirus Positive Tests in Oakland:

The Borough of Oakland has been notified by the Bergen County Department of Health that there is currently 1 new positive cases of COVID-19 reported in Oakland, bringing our to-date total of 276 positive reported cases. There are 3 new positive cases in Franklin Lakes bringing their to-date total to 236 cases, and 12 new positive cases in Wyckoff bringing their to-date total to 444 cases. Bergen County reported 1,269 new positive cases bringing the County of Bergen total to 24,389. Today the Borough of Oakland was notified by the Bergen County Department of Health that there was 1,123 new positive COVID-19 cases reported today, bringing the state-wide New Jersey total to 229,684 cases.
