Coronavirus Update 7-2-2020

Revised Metal Collection:

Town-wide metal collection has been moved to July 9, 2020, due to the July 4th Holiday.

Borough Offices Closed Friday July 3, 2020:

Borough Offices (Except for Emergency Services) are closed on Friday July 3, 2020 due to the Independence Day Holiday.  The Borough of Oakland wishes everyone a safe and healthy Independence Day weekend!

Summer Camp & Playgrounds:

Oakland Recreation Summer Camp begins on Monday July 6, 2020. All playgrounds at Oakland's parks will re-open on Monday July 6, 2020. 

DPW & Police Lobbies: 

The Department of Public Works and Oakland Police Department Lobbies remain open to the public. Masks are required upon entry. 

Oakland Public Library to Open July 6, 2020:

The Library opens its doors on July 6!  With that, there are some rules we all need to abide by:

  • All patrons who wish to enter must wear a mask.
  • Curbside pickup will continue for the foreseeable future.
  • No furniture may be brought into the library.
  • A self-check application will soon be available for smart devices.
  • Social distancing of 6 feet will be observed,
  • 1 on 1 interaction with the staff will not be available in person

Please call the Library at 201-337-3742 #7002 or email oaklcirc@bccls.org to place your Adult Department or Children's Department requests.

OPLNJ can put together a selection of materials, just make sure we are aware of your preferences. Please include your name and phone number on all messages. Returned materials will be quarantined for 3 weeks and will remain on your card until the staff can check them in. Not to worry as it is a Fine Free Summer at the Library! (This does not include lost or damaged books)

Primary Election This Tuesday July 7, 2020: All You Need to Know:

Primary Election is Tuesday July 7th.  All registered Republicans and Democrats were mailed a ballot.  All other voters were mailed an application for a mail in ballot. Please mail in your ballot or use one of the drop boxes in Bergen County (https://www.co.bergen.nj.us/bergen-county-board-of-elections/ballot-drop...).  There will be one polling place open on Election Day at the Senior Center.  Only voters with disabilities will be able to vote in the machine and must sign a certification that they are disabled.   Any other voters who show up at the polls will be given a provisional ballot to fill out.

Fireworks Safety Reminder:

As the Fourth of July approaches, the Borough of Oakland would like to warn residents of the dangers of fireworks.

Fireworks can cause serious injury and are illegal, with the exception of certain sparkling devices and novelty items.

  • Use of fireworks that do not fall under the category of certain sparklers and other non-exploding, non-aerial fireworks. As a rule of thumb, any fireworks purchased within the State of New Jersey are legal in Oakland Borough if used properly. Fireworks purchased out of state may be illegal. As a reminder, all fireworks, including sparklers, should be kept away from small children.

The following re-openings have been announced:

  • Today, July 2nd: Museums, Aquariums, Libraries, Bowling Alleys, Indoor Batting Cages, Boardwalk Arcades, Outdoor Water Parks, Indoor Shooting Ranges, Casinos, Playgrounds, Outdoor Amusement Parks
  • July 6th: Youth Day Camps, In-Person Summer Education, Expanded NJ Transit Rail and Light Rail, Graduation Ceremonies

Governor Murphy Announces Indoor Dining Will No Longer Resume:

Gov. Murphy issued an executive order on Monday reversing his decision to allow indoor dining to resume. Under the governor’s new order, restaurants will not be able to open indoor dining rooms today, July 2nd, as had been permitted under a prior executive order issued just four days earlier. The new order also prohibits the consumption of food or beverages and smoking in the indoor premises of any retail, recreational, or entertainment business, including casinos, where masks are strictly required.

Governor Murphy Announces Raised Limit for Outdoor Gatherings:

  1. Today Governor Murphy signed an Executive Order raising the limit on crowd size for outdoor gatherings to 500 people – effective tomorrow.
  2. Limits on all indoor gatherings – 25% of capacity, but with a maximum of 100 people – remain unchanged.

14-Day Quarantine Advisory Issued for Travelers from 16 States:

The governor has advised individuals traveling to New Jersey from 16 states with significant community spread of COVID-19 to quarantine for a 14-day period from the time of last contact within the identified state. The travel advisory applies to any person arriving from a state with a positive test rate higher than 10 per 100,000 residents or a state with a 10% or higher positivity rate over a 7-day rolling average. There are currently 16 states total that meet the criteria stated above: Alabama; Arkansas; Arizona; California; Florida; Georgia; Iowa; Idaho; Louisiana; Mississippi; North Carolina; Nevada; South Carolina; Tennessee; Texas; and Utah.

Bergen County Ballot Drop Boxes Available:

Ballot Drop Boxes can be found outside in the following locations:

  • Demarest - 118 Serpentine Road, Demarest, NJ (Borough Hall)
  • Fort Lee - 1355 Inwood Terrace/Anderson Avenue Circular Driveway (Fort Lee Community Center)
  • Hackensack - One Bergen County Plaza, Hackensack, NJ (County Administration Building)
  • Ramsey - 30 Wyckoff Avenue (Library - in rear of building)
  • Ridgewood - 131 North Maple Avenue, Ridgewood, NJ (Village Hall)
  • Rutherford - 176 Park Avenue, Rutherford (Borough Hall)

Ballot Drop Boxes are available 24-hours.  Ballots must be in the Drop Box by 8:00 p.m. on election night.  Ballots left after 8:00 p.m. on election night will be considered late and not counted.

Complete the U.S. Census!

The 2020 Census is still underway! As of today, the self-response rate for all of New Jersey is 68.3%, Bergen County is 69.9%, and Oakland is 80.8%. Please help us get that number as high as possible by responding for your household at 2020Census.gov, and encouraging your friends, family, and neighbors to complete the Census as soon as possible. As a reminder, the Census affects legislative representation and the allocation of billions of dollars in funding. In fact, NJ lost a seat in the House of Representatives as a result of the last Census! Let’s make sure we are all counted to keep our community as strong as possible.

Coronavirus Positive Tests in Oakland:

Today the Borough of Oakland was notified by the Bergen County Health Department that there are a total of 237 individuals in Oakland who tested positive for the Coronavirus (COVID-19). Bergen County has a total of 19,447 positive Coronavirus Cases, and the State of NJ has 172,356 positive cases.
