Roots for Rivers

Roots for Rivers

The Sustainable Oakland Green Team hosted the final phase of the Roots for Rivers Reforestation and Technical Assistance Grant. In 2 days, the team lead approximately 40 volunteers in planting and installing stakes and protective greenhouse tubes on 497 trees and underbrush. These tubes will help to speed the growth of the trees and deter birds and deer from grazing. It will also protect from strangle vines. The Sustainable Oakland Green Team and volunteers removed just over 160 root balls from invasive vines and thorn bushes at the planting site. The tubes will remain on trees and underbrush for 5 years or until the trees inside pop them off. This process was a total of 350 volunteer hours and we appreciate everyone who has helped through all phases of the project. If you see a fallen tube or one that has popped, please email greenteam@oakland-nj.org. For future events, please sign up for the Sustainable Oakland Green Team mailing list on the Green Team's website page.
