Back To School Safety Message From Oakland Police Department

The Oakland Police Department would like to put out a few reminders to our residents.

First and foremost, school is open. Due to the weather being still fairly nice, children like to walk and bike to and from school. Sometimes around this time of year, you have many things going on in your heads, but please be mindful of extra pedestrian traffic in town.

This is another important reason to not text and drive! Remember, it is the law for a motorist to STOP for pedestrians in crosswalks. It is equally important for motorists to obey crossing guards.  Our crossing guards do an excellent job preserving the safety of our children so be aware of their presence.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Association Child Passenger Safety Campaign is in September also. Nothing is more important than your child’s safety while you are driving with them. Make an appointment with the Oakland Police Department’s certified child seat experts. Call the Police Department anytime and make an appointment with either Detective Michael Catenacci or Officer Joseph Noury. Find out if your child’s seat is installed properly, has any recalls and get extra tips to keep your most valuable cargo safe!

Once again we would like to put out a reminder in regards to the drop off and pick up procedures at Valley Middle School. Morning drop off is to be done either at the front of the school or in the top lot by the library. Dropping off students is not permitted on Thomas McGuinnis Way. Pick up is either at the front of the school or on Lawlor Dr.  This is for the safety of our children.

Our children are our greatest resource; so let’s work together to keep them happy, healthy and safe.
