Congressman Josh Gottheimer named Oakland resident Thomas “Chopper” Russo as a recipient of the 5th District Hometown Heroes Awards Program. Russo, a ubiquitous presence in Oakland, was honored along with other community leaders from various Bergen County municipalities on December 14 at the Trustees Pavilion at Ramapo College, in Mahwah.

Nominees were chosen by neighbors and community leaders for their outstanding contributions to the community by volunteering, serving or working to help others. The 5th District Hometown Heroes Awards are presented to business leaders, first responders, teachers, children, seniors, and community leaders to recognize their commitment to bettering the lives of other New Jersey residents and families.

Russo never says no when it comes to helping out the Borough of Oakland.

Russo is currently the Chairman of the Oakland Public Events Committee, a member of the Oakland Sustainable Jersey Green Team, and Co-Chairman of the newly formed Holiday Decorating Committee. Russo also organizes the Annual “Choptoberfest”, which honors the volunteers of Oakland and invites all non-profits to come meet the community. Russo also organizes an Annual Pet Adoption Day here in Oakland, where Bergen residents are able to adopt shelter dogs and cats courtesy of Ramapo-Bergen Pet Adoption and Animal Refuge.

Congratulations to Russo on his recognition as a Hometown Hero!
