Mayor's Message - August 2023

When asking a new resident why they moved to Oakland you will most likely hear that Oakland is known for its outstanding recreation program and excellent schools.  When the new residents move here they find out that we have so much more for our children thanks to the many volunteer members on our Public Events Committee who have expanded our children's programs.

However there is a group of children and young adults who are not able to participate in the activities and programs offered. A few years ago I discussed this situation with former councilman Grant Van Eck and together we worked on the organization of a committee called "Access For All."  With the help of Councilman VanEck, a few residents volunteered.  Thank you to the members of this group.  But it is just a handful of volunteers AND  we are always looking for more volunteers to help.

What is Oakland's Access For All? It is a committee made up of volunteers who work hard to foster an inclusive experience for the disabled or challenged persons with recreational opportunities, accessibility to events and give them the ability to participate to the fullest extent possible in Oakland activities. They have provided an environment where regardless of their disability they are able to enjoy the festivities in our town.
