Mayor's Message - January 2019

Mayor Linda Schwager
Mayor Linda Schwager

This has been a very exciting month celebrating the winners of Congressman Josh Gottheimer's 5th District Hometown Heroes. Congratulations to two residents who received the awards this year: Chopper Russo and Keith Gross. I never had the opportunity to publicly congratulate last year's winner, Mike Guadagnino. Mike, chairman of Great Oak Park, and your committee deserve so much gratitude for all that you are doing for our residents.

By the time you read this newsletter, Oakland's First Annual Holiday Decorating Contest will be concluded. The winners will have been announced. So, remember, to participate next year! Thank you to Chopper Russo and Mike Rose for organizing this event. I'm told that residents have already contacted Chopper and Mike about helping with next year's program.

Another exciting news announcement was recently received. Both the U.S. House of Representatives and U.S. Senate have unanimously passed the bill to rename the Oakland Post Office in memory of our Postmaster Frank Leone. The bill is sitting on President Trump's desk waiting for his signature.

We are starting a new year shortly which means that Boards and Commissions may have vacancies. If you are interested in volunteering on a board or commission, please submit a Citizenship Leadership Form which can be obtained in our municipal building or on our website. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to contact me.

I wish everyone a happy holiday season and a very healthy New Year.

Linda
