Mayor Linda H. Schwager

On Tuesday, April 12, 2022, Oakland Board of Education held its annual School Board Election. Oakland residents had the opportunity to vote on the school budget at which time the majority of residents voted against the school budget.  Now it goes to the Governing Body, the Oakland Borough Council. To understand what happens next,  please read the brief summary of the procedure which must now be followed.

Procedure to be followed as set forth by New Jersey State Statute:

It is the responsibility of the municipal governing body to certify the taxes to the County Board of Taxation.  The municipal governing body may certify the original amount which appeared on the ballot or may certify a reduced amount.

If the governing body decides to certify a reduced based amount, it is important to note that they must identify the specific line item(s) to be reduced.

The Oakland Borough Council shall hold a public meeting to discuss the budget after receiving and reviewing the financial documents.

The Oakland Borough Council's decision must be in the form of a resolution and forwarded to the Oakland Board of Education and Executive County Superintendent of Schools no later than May 19, 2022.

The meeting will be open to the public and timely announced.  If you have any questions, please contact me at mayorschwager@oakland-nj.org.
