Mayor's Message - November 2021

Mayor Linda H. Schwager
Mayor Linda H. Schwager

Veteran's Day is observed annually on November 11th regardless of the day of the week. It has not been moved to a Monday like so many other holidays.

WHY? Veterans Day is the anniversary of the date and time of the armistice which ended World War I in 1918.

This day was originally called Armistice Day.  Armistice means truce--a temporary suspension of hostilities by mutual agreement. The armistice in WW I went into effect on the 11th day at the 11th hour in the 11th month.

With WW II requiring the largest mobilization of service men in the U.S. and later American forces went to Korea in 1954, veteran service organizations urged Congress to change the word "ARMISTICE" to VETERANS." On June 1, 1954, November 11th became a day to honor ALL VETERANS wherever and whenever they served.

On Thursday, November 11, 2021, the Borough of Oakland shall observe Veteran's Day in Veterans Park at the 11th hour, at which time we thank all military personnel who served the United Stated in all wars.

Thank you to all our veterans wherever and whenever you served.  We shall always remember what you have done for us.
