On Saturday, November 4th, the Oakland public library hosted the eighth annual "truck day" in the library's municipal parking lot.  Oakland’s DPW, Fire Department, First Aid Squad and Police Department brought their vehicles to the event. This free event was a family program, and all the children of Oakland were invited to attend. As a special treat, Oakland Public Events Committee offered refreshments and snacks to all and fire helmets, coloring books and stickers were given to all the children.

Children are naturally inquisitive and the enthusiasm and fascination about these big trucks was in high gear. The grand size of these vehicles caught all of the children's attention and their curiosity was peeked with all of the vehicles showing off their bright colors, sounds, lights and shapes. Moms, dads and children were role-playing, pretending to be police officers, firefighters, DPW or EMT crew members. Children took turns sitting in the driver's seat of the fire trucks, while others were touring the first aid squad ambulance, checking out the inside of the police cars and of course, the DPW had backhoes for those brave enough to climb aboard!

Oakland’s professionals, firefighters, police officers, DPW crews, EMT crews were all on hand to proudly display their vehicles and interact and engage with all the families. Their supervision ensured that all safety guidelines were followed.  Hopefully, meeting in person those "heroes" who serve our community gives our residents and children the importance of the work they do and maybe inspire some to serve as well.
