Garbage Collection Changes Take Effect in January 2004

The Borough's Garbage collection days will be changed for all Oakland residents on January 5, 2004.  This is the first Monday of the new year.  This change is made every four years to be fair to the side of town without a pickup on the Monday holidays.

Here's how it will work:

  • The homes that currently have their garbage picked up on Monday and Thursday will switch to Tuesday and Friday.  The current Tuesday and Friday pickups will switch to Monday and Thursday

  • Yard waste will be picked up on the opposite Monday or Tuesday of your garbage pickup.

GARBAGE & TRASH DISPOSAL

  • The Borough is divided into two garbage pickup routes; one route receives twice weekly pickups on Mondays & Thursdays; the other receives twice weekly pickup on Tuesdays & Fridays.
    [click for street list]
  • Garbage will not be collected on the following holidays:  New Year's Day, Good Friday, Memorial Day, 4th of July, Labor Day,  Thanksgiving and Christmas
  • Garbage should be placed at curbside in garbage cans or in tied, plastic bags.  Corrugated cardboard boxes are a recyclable paper material and not eligible for garbage/trash collection.  Nor should boxes be used as trash containers.
  • Garbage or recyclables should he placed at curbside no earlier than 6:00 p.m. the evening before the day of scheduled collection. Materials should be placed at curbside before going to bed the night before collection to avoid missing early morning pick-ups by the hauler.
  • Other trash/rubbish, such as household furniture, (no metal!) is picked up on regular garbage days. Three large, bulky items are eligible for collection on any one collection day.
  • Building or other renovation materials, kitchen or bathroom fixtures, automobile parts and tires are never eligible for collection. Residents must make private arrangements for disposition of such items.

HOUSEHOLD BATTERIES

Batteries - Household batteries are defined for simplicity as any type of a battery used for personal purposes which will fit into a man's suit coat pocket. They should never be included with trash/garbage. Rather, they should be accumulated by each household in a convenient container and taken to a battery collection center maintained by the Borough. Currently, such centers are located at the D.P.W. garage (outside), the Borough Hall (inside and outside), the Borough Library, Shop-Rite and Oakland Hardware.

USED AUTO PRODUCTS

Never discard such materials in storm sewers, woods, fields, rivers or streams. Please dispose of them in this way:

A) Motor Oil: Take to a gas station where they change oil. Put your oil in an easy to pour container such as a milk jug.  Never take it or leave it after hours; always go during business hours. Never mix oil with any other substance such as water, gas, or anti-freeze. There may be a minimal charge for this service.
B) Auto Batteries: Take to a gas station
C) Tires: Most tire dealers will take your used tires, but they will rightfully charge you several dollars/tire for this service since this is their cost for disposal of the tire.

 WHITE GOODS & OTHER METALS

These metals have a separate curbside pickup on the 1st Thursday of every month.

White goods is a condensed phrase to include all the traditional household appliances such as washers, dryers, refrigerators, stoves, hot water heaters, etc. (Other metals might include shelving, tools, air conditioners, some toys, some furniture, etc.).  Because of the freon gas in them a special truck is needed to pick up refrigerators and air conditioners.  Please call the D.P.W. Office at 201-337-8104 whenever you plan on placing either of these items at curbside for collection.

YARD WASTE

Yard waste is collected every Monday and Tuesday on the opposite day of your garbage collections.  The service begins the first week in April and extends through the second week in December.  Yard waste should be placed at curb in open reusable containers or in biodegradable paper bags.  All kinds and colors of plastic bags are prohibited.  Any vegetative waste in plastic bags will be left on the curb.

Leaves and grass may be placed together in the same container.  Sticks, twigs and brush should be placed in a separate container.  Brush or branches too large or awkward for a container must be bundled and tied.  Tree branches may not exceed 4 inches in diameter or 4 feet in length.  Bundles of brush or branches may not exceed 50 pounds.  Christmas trees are collected at curbside on a random basis during the entire month of January.  They are recycled by chipping.
