Borough of Oakland Announces Building Numbers Awareness Campaign

Oakland, N.J. - August 30, 2022 - The Borough of Oakland has announced that on or about November 1, 2022, the Fire Preventionm Bureau will be inspecting each street to ensure that every house and business have a street number correctly displayed according with ordinance 10-6.5. This is to help ensure that in case of an emergency, that first responding agencies can get to your location quickly with as little confusion as possible. 

The criteria for numbering all houses and businesses is as follows: 

  • The number may be written in English or in Arabic numerals (Example 12 or VII); 
  • The number may be at least four inches in height and must not exceed one (1) foot in height or width; 
  • The number must be located in a position that is clearly visible from the street; 
  • The number must be affixed to the building, a permanently installed post or pole on a sign, which is permitted on the property by the Zoning Officer; 
  • The number must be painted or made of metal, wood, or other permanent material; 
  • The number must be visible in both day time and at night. 

Please note that the property owner or occupant is responsible for maintaining the street number.
