Unemployment Benefits:

In the seven weeks since COVID-19 hit New Jersey in mid-March, 1,018,785 unemployment claims have been filed, by far the most ever recorded for a similar period. With more than 642,000 now receiving unemployment in the Garden State — and an additional 72,000 federal Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA) claims processed last week — the Department of Labor has created online guides to walk people through the weekly certification process. The certification questions have been an obstacle for tens of thousands of claimants who have answered a question incorrectly and had their payments delayed.

MVC Agency, Inspection Station Closures Extended:

All New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission agency, road testing, and inspections facilities will remain closed until at least Tuesday, May 26. Most renewals of driver licenses, non-driver IDs, and registrations – including some commercial registrations – can be processed online at NJMVC.gov. Customers can also change their address, pay fees, and access other services online.

Retail Businesses and Schools:

Governor Phil Murphy and Superintendent of the State Police Colonel Patrick Callahan today announced an Administrative Order clarifying that recreational and entertainment activities prohibited under Executive Order No. 107 (2020) are also prohibited from taking place within the brick-and-mortar premises of essential retail businesses that are permitted to remain open.

Under the order, recreational and entertainment activities are also prohibited within the facilities of public, private, and parochial preschool programs, or elementary and secondary schools, including charter and renaissance schools that remain closed to students.

The Order will take effect immediately. A copy of the Administrative Order can be found here.

Nursing Students Given Waivers to Help in Nursing Homes:

New Jersey’s long-term care facilities (LTCFs) need help responding to the COVID-19 pandemic. NJ’s nursing students are primed to step in to lend critical support to care for one of our most vulnerable populations. Through the NJ Student Nurse Strong Initiative, nursing students can now be hired by LTCFs as temporary nurse aides per waivers recently signed by the NJ Department of Health.
