Mayor's Message - April 2022

My message this month concerns the effects on our residents of Russia's invasion into Ukraine.  Many of our residents are outraged and wish to help the innocent people who are struggling.  I proposed a Resolution in Support of the People of Ukraine at our last Oakland Council Meeting (March 9, 2022) which was unanimously passed.

You may wish to help by donating goods and money but please beware of scammers.

Scammers are on the "lookout" to take advantage of your generosity and your desire to help.  Please do your research before giving money and before giving your personal information:  

• Make sure you are donating to a legitimate 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.  You can find out by going online to the IRS Website or NJ Division of Consumer Affairs.
• Get more information--go to Guidestar on the web.
• Do not assume anything; do your own research.
• Do not give money/payment in cash and do not use a DEBITCARD; use a credit card.
• Very important--that you check your accounts after you donate.  Look for suspicious activity or unauthorized charges.

It is a wonderful opportunity to be able to help others.  But make sure you do so safely.
