Mayor's Message April 2024

Dear Resident,

The Borough of Oakland is proud to announce that two (2) new PFAS (“per- and polyfluoroalkylsubstances”) treatment facilities have been installed at Well 5 and Well 10 and are currently operational. Laboratory test results at these wells are returning as “not detected” for PFAS chemicals.  In addition, a PFAS treatment system will be operational at Well 9 in the near future and there are also plans to install PFAS treatment at our other remaining wells.

Even though the treatment systems are now removing PFAS chemicals from Wells 5 and 10 to non -detectable amounts (and PFAS levels are below the state maximum contaminant levels on all other wells) you are receiving the enclosed notice because it is based on sample results from before the treatment systems were in place.  Notice requirements are based on a four quarter running annual average (RAA) so you will receive another notice concerning Well 10 in July.  After that time, we expect the RAA to decrease below the maximum contaminant level and no additional notices will be required.

PFAS chemicals do not occur naturally but have been found in the underground aquifer from which the Borough draws its water, possibly from past industrial discharges. This project was completed in accordance with the Borough’s agreement with the NJDEP. Additional information regarding PFAS may be found on the Borough’s website.

Sincerely,

Eric Kulmala
