Motor Vehicle Commission Updates Online Appointment System Allowing Drivers to “Skip the Trip”

Press Release

The New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission recently announced several changes to its appointment system making it easier for New Jersey residents to complete common transactions online.

The new updates will make completing the most common transactions at MVC, such as renewing a driver’s license, easier and less time consuming. To make an appointment online visit: https://telegov.njportal.com/njmvc/

Additional MVC updates are provided below:

  • “Senior Hours” at MVC for New/Used Car Purchases: All MVC Vehicle Centers set aside special hours from 2-4pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays for customers age 65 and over and those who are medically prohibited from wearing a mask. These “Senior Hours” will only be for new and used car purchases at Vehicle Centers. Customers are reminded that no license transactions are processed at Vehicle Centers.
  • A new law extends the validity of all driver license and identification card photographs from a maximum of eight years to a maximum of 12 years. For residents 65 and older, driver license and ID photographs are permanently valid.
  • An executive order was signed that extends the time for individuals to apply for renewed disability placards, until 90 days after the last day of the public health emergency.
  • Licenses that expired on December 31 can be renewed online, and no longer require an in-person visit.
  • Any valid New Jersey commercial driver’s license or commercial learner’s permit due for renewal between March 1, 2020 and February 28, 2021 has been extended until February 28. 2021.
  • CDL Renewals Now Available by Appointment at NJMVC.
  • Permit Holders can now use their stamped permit to drive for 60 days after they pass the road test.
  • New Residents: legislation was passed extending the window for out-of-state transfers from 60 days to 120 days. The MVC has authorized Licensing Centers to process out-of-state registration and title transfers concurrently with license transfers, to eliminate the need for multiple MVC visits by customers.
  • License Plate Drop Boxes: Many agency locations now have drop boxes available for license plates to be returned any day or time. Once you drop them off, we mail you a receipt to your address of record.
