Spring Break Sports Camp Returns to Oakland Recreation Fields

By David Pacquiao
The Oakland Recreation Committee is teaming up with a local multi-sport program to give kids ages 5-12 a week-long taste of everything from golf to flag football this April. The Spring Break Sports Camp runs Monday through Friday, April 20-24, at the Oakland Recreation Fields. Full-day sessions run 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. for $387 per child, and half-day sessions run 9 a.m. to noon for $287 per child.
Each day, campers rotate through a variety of sports — including soccer, tennis, lacrosse, ultimate frisbee, volleyball, and flag football — with trained coaches leading every station. All equipment is provided, so kids just need to show up with water, a snack, and a lunch.
The camp is run in partnership with TGA (Tennis Golf Athletics) of Bergen County, which has been working with Oakland Recreation Committee for at least eight years. Kevin Rooney, owner of the Bergen County TGA program, says the goal is simple: get kids moving and let them discover something new. "Maybe they'll not know they like it, and then they'll love it when they leave," Rooney said. "They get to experience a number of sports."
The camp isn't just a one-and-done experience. Kids who find a sport they love during spring break can continue through Oakland Recreation Committee's ongoing programs — including golf and pickleball clinics offered right here in town on a seasonal basis.
Coaches keep class sizes small — typically no more than six to eight kids per coach — so every camper gets plenty of hands-on instruction and attention.
Registration is handled through the Oakland Recreation Committee. Visit OaklandRec.org to sign up. For questions, contact Christine Kostianis at ckostianis@playtga.com or 917-304-3986. Coaches and Volunteers Wanted
TGA is always looking for part-time coaches and volunteers. Paid positions offer flexible scheduling, and volunteers are equally welcome — training is provided for both. You don't need to be a pro in any one sport; the main requirement is a desire to work with kids. If you have an idea for a sport that isn't currently listed on TGA's site, Rooney said he'll do his best to find a way to make it happen. Contact Rooney at krooney@playtga.com or (201) 230-9502.
