Keeping Oakland a Tree City takes a Village!
Just a month ago we received a letter from the Arbor Day Foundation saying that we had once again achieved Tree City USA status. This is recognition of our community's unwavering commitment to the planting, care, and celebration of trees.
This past Arbor Day we offered to residents who preregistered an Adopt a Junior Tree. The Shade Tree Commission gave away 20 six-foot trees that residents could plant anywhere on their property. This was a special arbor day program, different from our Adopt-a- Street Tree program that residents can sign up for any time of the year to get on the planting schedule. (contact shadetree@oakland-nj.org to sign up)
The Oakland Branch of Columbia bank also donated a beautiful oak tree to the Borough for Arbor Day and it was planted in Rotary Park. Thank you very much Columbia Bank!!
Private resident of Oakland, Mr. Larry Levine, donated 3 trees which will be planted by the Post Office along Oak Street. The 3 Linden trees were purchased locally at the Riverside Nursery and the DPW will be installing them early this month. Thank you, Mr. Levine!!
Caring for our trees certainly takes a village! Whether you are donating, watering, planting, or replanting after a removal, these are all important steps to keep our community green. In exchange, the trees not only beautify our neighborhoods, but help decrease from stormwater runoff, clean our air and water, and provide shade and habitat for wildlife.
Yours treely,
The Shade Tree Commission
